Warehouse management system development: a build guide
A WMS project fails at go-live, not at design. The plan has to assume the warehouse keeps shipping while you replace the system underneath it.
The modules that matter first
Receiving, putaway, inventory by location, picking, packing, and shipping. Cycle counting comes next. Everything else — labor management, yard, kitting — is phase two.
Barcode, RFID, or both
Barcodes are cheap, reliable, and line-of-sight. RFID pays off for bulk reads, high-value assets, and pallet-level visibility. Most operations run barcode primary with RFID on specific flows.
Slotting and picking logic
Velocity-based slotting, zone picking, and batch/wave strategies change pick travel time more than any UI improvement. Model them as configurable rules, not hardcoded behavior.
Rollout without stopping
Run parallel on one zone or one customer, reconcile daily, and expand. Keep a rollback plan for the first two weeks and staff the floor with support during every shift change.
