Shortlists usually come from directories; decisions should come from a scorecard. These are the five dimensions that predict whether a supply chain build lands.
Domain fit
Warehouse, transport, freight forwarding, and parcel are different problems. Ask for work in your sub-vertical, not just 'logistics'.
Architecture and data model
Request a whiteboard session on your event model: shipments, stops, units, exceptions. A partner who models your domain in an hour will build it in months.
Security and compliance
SSO, role-based access, audit trails, encryption, and vendor access controls should be default answers, not change requests.
Total cost of ownership
Include hosting, integration maintenance, mobile release management, and support. Build cost is typically 60-70% of three-year spend.
Team continuity
Ask who stays after launch. Rotating teams lose the operational nuance that made the system usable.
