Custom ERP and distribution software: extend or replace?
Ripping out an ERP is rarely the right first move. Building the layer your people touch hourly, on top of the ERP you already paid for, usually is.
The extension layer pattern
Keep finance and master data in the ERP. Build operational workflows — receiving, dispatch, returns, customer service — as services that read and write through documented interfaces.
Integration discipline
One canonical event stream, idempotent writes, and reconciliation jobs. Most ERP integration failures are duplicate or out-of-order writes, not connectivity.
When replacement is justified
Unsupported versions, vendor exit, or a licensing model that penalizes growth. Otherwise the business case rarely clears.
Odoo and mid-market options
For mid-market distributors, an open-core ERP with custom modules often beats both heavy suites and full bespoke systems.
